Description

The Palace of the Republic is one of the most beautiful and most impressive buildings in the center of Banja Luka, located beside the Ban's Court. Built in 1936 to a design by Belgrade architect Miodrag Vasić, it originally served as the headquarters of the Mortgage Bank, constructed during the tenure of Ban Tisa Milosavljević. The building's facade is adorned by two impressive bronze statues of Krajina peasants, a later addition by sculptor Vladimir Pavlovič Zagorodnjuk, which have become one of the most recognizable features of this structure.

After the Second World War the building functioned as the National Bank, then as the Social Accounting Service — popularly known as SDK, a name many Banja Luka residents still use today. Always a favorite gathering spot for locals heading out into the city, since 2008 the building has borne the name Palace of the Republic and serves as the working residence of the President of Republika Srpska. A true blend of history, architecture, and statesmanship in the heart of Banja Luka.
