Prokosko Lake

11.3 km to city center

Description

Prokoško Lake, also known as the "Mountain Eye" of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is nestled in the heart of Vranica Mountain at an impressive altitude of 1,636 meters. This glacial lake, up to 13 meters deep, is one of the most precious natural monuments in the country. The road to it from Fojnica winds through picturesque scenery, and although the final section of the trail is an unpaved track, the reward that awaits visitors at the top — crystal clear water surrounded by authentic wooden shepherd huts and peaks such as Krstac and Stražica — is truly breathtaking. As home to the endemic alpine newt, the lake is an ecological gem that draws lovers of unspoiled wilderness with its landscape and tranquility.

Since 2005, the area has been designated a Category III natural monument, aimed at preserving its unique flora and fauna. The lake is one of the few remaining habitats of the alpine newt (Triturus alpestris reiseri), a rare amphibian that serves as a symbol of the biodiversity of Vranica.

Altitude: 1,636 m
Protection: Natural monument since 2005.
Access: Unpaved road 18 km — 4×4 recommended
