Tara Canyon

18.4 km to city center

Description

The Tara Canyon is one of those natural wonders that must be experienced at least once in a lifetime. The second deepest river canyon in the world, right after the Grand Canyon, it plunges to a depth of 1,300 meters and is the largest canyon in Europe. The Tara River, approximately 160 kilometers long with 14 tributaries and 69 rapids, has gained fame far beyond the region thanks to its crystal clear water, earning it the name "Tear of Europe" — water so pure it can be drunk from any point along the river.

For the last 40 kilometers, the Tara River forms the natural border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and at Šćepan Polje it merges with the Piva to give birth to the Drina River — once called Zelenika due to its magical greenish color. The rafting season begins in late April, when water levels are high and the water is cold — ideal for adrenaline enthusiasts — and by early summer it becomes perfect for families with children as well. It is part of Durmitor National Park and is under UNESCO protection, and its forests, rich fauna, and thrilling rapids make it a destination that equally attracts adventurers and nature lovers.
