Basic information
Located in the heart of the Central Bosnia Canton, Jajce proudly bears the title of one of the most significant historical cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its foundations were laid by Herceg Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, and the city soon became an impregnable capital for the Bosnian kings. It was here in 1461 that the last Bosnian king, Stephen Tomashevich, was crowned, forever inscribing Jajce into the foundations of Bosnian statehood. Although it was the last city to fall under Ottoman rule (in 1528), Jajce survived the ups and downs of the centuries, great fires, and the replacement of empires, retaining its authentic spirit that blends ancient traces, medieval ramparts, and the modern history written at the AVNOJ session.
Today, Jajce is a true open-air museum, where different eras meet at every turn. From the magnificent fortress with its royal palace, through the mysterious catacombs and the temple of the god Mithras, all the way to the Franciscan Monastery and church, which bear witness to the enduring spirituality of this region. However, what makes Jajce unique in the world is its fascinating blend of history and nature – it is one of the few cities with a magnificent waterfall right in its very center, making Jajce an unmissable destination for travelers from all over the world.
