Basic Information
Travnik is not just a town; it is a living museum of Bosnian history, located almost in the very geographic heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina. As the long-time capital of the Ottoman viziers (1686–1850), this town was for centuries a center of power, culture, and diplomacy, earning it the nickname “the European Istanbul.” Set in the narrow valley of the Lašva River and surrounded by the Vilenica mountains and the majestic Vlašić, Travnik offers a unique blend of natural freshness and rich architectural heritage.
Throughout history, Travnik has been a strategic hub since the time of the Illyrian Desidiates and the medieval parish of Lašva. Its most recognizable symbol is Travnik Fortress (Stari grad), built in the 15th century and considered one of the best-preserved fortresses in the country. The town is also known for the unique Šarena džamija (Sulejmanija), whose walls are decorated with floral motifs, and for Plava Voda, a spring that emerges from the rocks, creating a soothing atmosphere ideal for enjoying traditional Bosnian coffee. As the birthplace of Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andrić, Travnik proudly preserves his birthplace, reminding visitors of the literary giant who made this town famous around the world with The Bridge on the Drina.
