Pliva Lake
Description
Located just five kilometers from the royal city of Jajce are the Great and Little Plivsko Lakes, the largest natural lakes in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a true paradise for water lovers and those who appreciate pristine nature. Formed by the specific deposition of travertine deposits over thousands of years, these lakes are not only a hydrological phenomenon but also the heart of the region's sports and recreational life. Due to its unique water density, the Big Lake is considered one of the best places in the world for flatwater kayaking and canoeing, a fact confirmed in 1963 when it hosted the European and World Championships. With depths of up to 36 meters and pleasant summer temperatures above 21°C, the lakes are a perfect destination for swimmers, divers, and anglers.
The medieval mills, located on a limestone ridge between two lakes, lend a special charm to this landscape. These authentic wooden structures, which once ground grain for the local population, have today been declared a national monument under the name "Cultural Landscape – Plivska Lakes with the Mill Complex." The entire valley, which also includes the nearby Đol and Olić lakes near Šipovo, represents a perfect blend of historical heritage and tourist infrastructure, from campgrounds and hotels to well-appointed resorts offering rest for the soul and body.
