Žuta tabija

Panoramic View

2.1 km to city center

Description

The Yellow Fortress (Žuta tabija) is one of Sarajevo's most beloved viewpoints, set on the Jekovac cliff above the Vratnik old town – which is why it is also known as the Jekovac Bastion. It takes its name from the yellowish stone from which it was built. It was one of five bastions of the mighty defensive wall raised around Vratnik in the 18th century, after Eugene of Savoy burned Sarajevo in 1697.

The fortress is built of roughly hewn stone, and its northern side rises as much as 27.5 metres. From its walls opens one of the finest views of the city, well worth seeking out along the narrow lanes of the Old Town. In summer the Yellow Fortress comes alive with concerts and music and poetry evenings. Its special charm is the Ramadan cannon, which each evening during the fast announces iftar – the moment the daily fast is broken – and remains a real attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Access: on foot through the Old Town
Near the Kovači cemetery
~4.8 km from the bus station
