Archaeological site Municipium Malvesiatium
Description
Archaeological research and epigraphic inscriptions confirm that Skelani was the seat of the municipium of Malvesiatium, which received this status during the reign of Emperor Vespasian. For decades it was believed that the capricious Drina had permanently destroyed this ancient gem, but Mirko Babić's initiative in 2008 opened a new era of discovery. Soon after, the Archaeological Museum "Roman Municipium" was founded, and today it preserves the priceless treasures of this region. Special attention is drawn by a splendid villa with floor mosaics covering 140 square meters. Among them, the figure of Medusa stands out, whose gaze was believed to have apotropaic power, protecting hosts and guests from evil. While the conserved mosaics await their return to their original place, Skelani is once again becoming an essential point on the map of Roman history, bearing witness to its former splendor and power.
