Stećci Srebrenica
Description
As a unique phenomenon of medieval Bosnia, stećci have preserved the secrets of the past for centuries, woven into stone blocks that defy time. In the Srebrenica area, these silent witnesses of history, known locally as mramorje or stone wedding guests, are scattered across as many as 50 necropolises. With nearly a thousand monuments, this region is a true treasury of authentic symbolism, ornaments, and ancient epitaphs dating from the 12th to the 16th century.
Special importance is attached to the sites of Grabljice in Urisići and Mramorje in Bektići, which have been declared national monuments because of their priceless value. A visit to these necropolises offers an authentic encounter with the mystical beauty of eastern Bosnia, where every stećak tells a story of life, death, and eternity, inviting travelers to pause before a beauty recognized around the world.
