Basic Information
Located in the heart of Central Bosnia Canton, Jajce is one of the most significant historical towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Founded by Duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić in the late 14th century, it soon became the capital of the Bosnian kings. It was here, in 1461, that the last Bosnian king, Stjepan Tomašević, was crowned. Over the centuries, Jajce has preserved its unique blend of medieval heritage, Ottoman influences, and modern history associated with the AVNOJ assembly.
Today, Jajce is a true open-air museum. Its impressive fortress, royal court, catacombs, Temple of Mithras, and Franciscan Monastery all bear witness to its rich past. The town’s most distinctive feature is its magnificent waterfall located in the very center, making Jajce one of the few places in the world where history and nature meet in such a spectacular way.
