Church of St. George the Martyr
Description
The Parish of St. George in Vitez is the spiritual center of the Catholic people of the Lašva region, with a tradition spanning more than a century and a half. Founded in 1861 by separating from Guča Gora, the parish began modestly in Jardol, and with the construction of the first church in 1869, the seat was permanently moved to Vitez. The present monumental parish church, built at the turn of the century (1896–1900), proudly stands as a symbol of faith and architectural beauty. Its interior is adorned with outstanding works of art, such as the bronze Way of the Cross by sculptor Kruno Bošnjak and striking stained-glass windows, while its exterior, recently restored according to a design by architect Tihomir Strauss, dominates the cityscape.
Besides the main church, the parish is known for the Calvary, a pilgrimage site on a hill built by the Jesuits in 1912. The Way of the Cross leading to the chapel of Our Lady on the hilltop is a place of special penitential fervor, especially during Lenten Fridays and the major celebrations in September. The Vitez parish is one of the few that has recorded continuous growth in the number of believers, gathering more than 11,000 souls today from numerous settlements such as Mošunj – a site that also preserves the oldest traces of Christianity in this area in the form of the remains of an early Christian basilica.
