Orthodox Church of the Holy Mother of God

444 m to the town center

Description

The Orthodox Church of the Holy Mother of God in Jajce, built in 1935, is a moving symbol of renewal and perseverance. Located outside the city walls, northwest of the Banjalučka Gate, this church belongs to the Eparchy of Banja Luka and bears witness to the rich spiritual tapestry of the royal town. Although its foundations were covered with debris for decades, a new life for this temple began in 2018 with the construction of a new church on the old foundations, returning to the faithful and to the town one of its most important spiritual anchors.

What made this church an artistic gem was its unique iconostasis, which represented a perfect blend of different cultures and skills. Handcrafted by the Jajce carpenter Hajrudin Kršlak, the iconostasis was decorated with motifs from the folk art of Janja, while the icons on it were painted in 1935 by the famous Macedonian artist Lazar Ličinski.
