Description

The Janj Primeval Forest, located on the western slopes of the Stolovaš massif near Šipovo, is a true natural gem and the first natural heritage site in Bosnia and Herzegovina to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. As a strict nature reserve, Janj is an untouched ecosystem in which human hands have not intervened for decades, allowing giant beech, fir, and maple trees to complete their natural cycle from germination to decay. This "primeval forest cathedral" is part of the largest serial heritage site in the world, connecting our forests with the ancient beech forests of the Carpathians and the rest of Europe. Its shadowy expanses provide a home for thousands of species of flora and fauna, making it an invaluable open-air laboratory and a symbol of wild, untamed beauty that takes the breath away of every visitor.
