Vaganska cave
Description
Vaganska Cave is one of those places that surprises you right at the entrance—and doesn't stop surprising you until you leave. Located on the Šipovo–Kupres highway, just 20 kilometers from Šipovo's center, this cave, which only opened to the public in 2021, has quickly become one of the most attractive speleological attractions in the Republika Srpska. And it's no wonder—on its 125 meters of developed tourist trail, Vaganska Cave showcases one of the highest concentrations of stalactites and stalagmites in the region, and nature has truly outdone itself in its artistic display.
You weave through the Shepherd's Hall, the Sime Šolaja Gallery, the Hall of Ceremonies, the Hall of Giants, and the Hall of Rada Marijanac, stooping and twisting between the cave's formations—all so as not to damage them, because the formations sometimes extend right into the middle of the path. Adding to the cave's special charm is the presence of the broad-eared bat—an exceptionally rare species of blind mouse that rests on the tips of stalactites right beside visitors. Surrounding all of this are three ancient legends—about the lost shepherdess whose cries can still be heard today, about smoke emerging from the cave onto the Kuprešsko Field, and about the cow that entered Vaganska but emerged from Kupres without horns.
