Šipovo
Basic Information
Šipovo is a charming town and the seat of the municipality of the same name, located in the southwestern part of Republika Srpska, at the confluence of the clear Janja and Pliva rivers. This hilly-mountainous area is a true treasure trove of natural beauty, from the spectacular river springs and Janjski otoci to the mysterious Vagnjska pećina and the medieval fortress of Sokol on the Pliva. The town has a long and layered history dating back to antiquity, when the Roman municipium Baloie flourished here. Today, Šipovo is recognized as a top ecotourism destination, where the traditional Krajina way of life blends perfectly with the untouched nature of the Janja forests and the magnificent mountain massifs that surround it.
Guide for Tourists Visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina
Spring
The perfect time to visit the sources of the Pliva River. In spring, they are at their most powerful, and the lush vegetation and blooming meadows on the Janjska visoravan make walks unforgettable
Summer
Summer in Šipovo is reserved for Janjski otoci. The natural river branches and waterfalls offer the perfect refreshment. It’s the time for a light lunch by the river (trout is a must!)
Autumn
When beeches and maples in the Janj primeval forest (UNESCO) take on golden and red hues, the forest looks like something out of a fairy tale. Autumn is ideal for longer hiking tours to Vitorog or Lisina, mushroom picking, and enjoying the peace
Winter
Winters in Šipovo are harsh and snowy, turning the Janjska visoravan into a true winter postcard. A stay in one of the rural households is recommended, with the crackling fire from the hearth
