Description

Ljubić mountain is a low and easily accessible mountain in northern Bosnia, in the municipality of Prnjavor, Republika Srpska — one of the northernmost mountains in Bosnia. It has the shape of a low, broad pyramid. The highest peak is Svinjar (594 m above sea level), and the others are Orlovski vis (543 m), Mramorje (543 m), Mramor (540 m), and Klupe (512 m). It is bordered to the south by the Ukrina River, and to the north by the Vijaka stream and the Drenova reservoir.

It is rich in waterways, waterfalls, drinking water springs, forests, and wildlife, and it also has mineral wealth. From the peaks, there are views of Borja, Kozara, Motajica, Ozren, and Manjač, and in exceptionally clear weather, of Grmeč, Vlašić, and Papuk as well. At the top of Svinjar there is a military radio tower — the summit itself is not accessible to civilians. A popular excursion area with a maintained site is at Ravno brdo.

A pyramid on the edge of Bosnia

Ljubić does not look like the kind of mountain people usually imagine — there are no sharp ridges or high peaks dominating the landscape. But precisely because of its low, broad pyramidal shape, and because it stands alone in the space between the mountains of central Bosnia and the Pannonian Plain, it can be seen from afar and itself sees far. From Orlovski vis or Svinjar, there is a view of about ten surrounding mountains — Borja, Kozara, Motajica, Ozren, Manjač — and on an exceptionally clear day, the distant peaks of Grmeč, Vlašić, and Papuk also come into view.

Water, forest, and wildlife

Ljubić is a mountain rich in water. Numerous streams, attractive waterfalls, and drinking water springs are spread across the mountain, making it exceptionally pleasant for hiking and spending time in nature. The forests are well preserved, the wildlife is rich, and among locals Ljubić also carries the unusual nickname — the mountain of the horned viper, which speaks to the diversity and vitality of the mountain ecosystem that remains largely untouched to this day.

Excursion area and historical landmark

At Ravno brdo on Ljubić, the Prnjavor Forestry Administration arranged an excursion area with a sports field, and in 2015 the PD Adrenalin mountaineering club from Teslić marked the first hiking trail along the mountain ridge. That same year, at the Vitin Konak site, local resident Brane Šušak built a memorial made of carved stone in the shape of a pyramid, dedicated to the uprising and the insurgent of the Ljubić area, along with a marble plaque from SUBNOR Prnjavor with information about the formation of the Prnjavor Partisan Company in 1941.

Horned viper (Vipera ammodytes), the most venomous snake in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a common sight on Ljubić mountain, especially in rocky areas along forest edges, piles of stones, and sunny spots on the way to the summit. Around Drenova Lake, extra caution is recommended in shoreline vegetation and on wet rocks — in the event of a bite, seek medical help immediately and avoid cutting, sucking, or applying a tourniquet.
