Alagovac Lake

3.8 km from the city center

Description

Alagovac Lake is a peaceful oasis just 4 kilometers north of Nevesinje, nestled at the foot of Velež at an altitude that gives this area a special freshness and clean air. Created in 1968 by damming the stream of the same name with an earth embankment, this artificial lake covers 40 hectares and holds 2.5 million cubic meters of water, making it the largest reservoir in the Nevesinje municipality. Its primary purpose is to supply the town with water, but its natural setting and rich fishing potential have long since turned it into a favorite excursion spot for locals and an increasing number of visitors from the surrounding area.

The sports fishing association "Alagovac" regularly stocks the lake with fish — carp, grass carp, pikeperch, silver carp and catfish make it one of the richer fishing spots in this part of Herzegovina, and the association's experienced guides are available to anyone who wants to try their luck with a rod for the first time. In addition to fishing, the lake offers camping, swimming and rowing on calm water — and the view of Velež rising above the shore is the perfect backdrop for a day spent far from the city crowds.

The sea of Nevesinje

Alagovac earned the nickname the sea of Nevesinje not only because of its size but also because of its character. At 860 meters above sea level, sheltered by forest and the slopes of Velež, the lake offers the kind of peace that is increasingly hard to find by the sea.

The sandy beaches are natural and free of infrastructure, and some are reached only by a gravel path through the forest — which makes them even more appealing to those looking for authenticity. The lakeside promenade with benches and barbecue spots is ideal for a family day trip, and one of the beaches also has a well-equipped campsite for multi-day stays.
