Bašića mašet
Description
The nišan of Omer-aga Bašić in the village of Jakir near Glamoč is one of the most interesting monuments in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located 3 km from Glamoč, along the road to Livno, and is part of two necropolises of old nišans. The smaller necropolis contains rare nišans with reliefs – one shows a hand holding a falcon and a shield with a dagger, while another depicts a hand with a sphere. The larger necropolis has around fifty nišans, many of them damaged, with mushroom-shaped turbans.
Omer-aga Bašić's nišan, known as Bašića mašet, is the largest in the Balkans – 4.35 m high, with a base of 0.96 x 0.96 m and a 2 m turban. The inscription in large script marks the year of death 1213 AH (1798) and a prayer for his soul. The turban is mushroom-shaped and, according to legend, can shelter eight people from the rain.
