Blagaj Tekke

11.4 km to the city center

Description

The Blagaj Tekke is one of the most beautiful and spiritual places in Herzegovina, set beside the source of the Buna River, near Mostar. It was built around 1520 as a dervish lodge – a place of prayer and spiritual retreat – its architecture blending Ottoman, Mediterranean and Herzegovinian influences with Baroque touches. The white building nestles against a tall cliff, right by the dark cave from which the Buna emerges, creating a breathtaking sight.

The Buna spring is one of the strongest karst springs in Europe: powerful, clear water bursts out beneath a cliff about 200 metres high and stays cold, around 9 degrees, all year round. The interior is modest but rich in symbols of faith, and religious rites are still held there at times. With its blend of natural power and mystical calm, Blagaj is a must-see for anyone wishing to feel the soul of Herzegovina.

Best time: spring and early autumn (fewer crowds)
Parking: Available
Entry: Symbolic for the tekke
