Description

Ćuprijska Mosque, also known as the Hadži-Alija Hadžisalihović Mosque, is one of the oldest mosques in Stolac. Located on the left bank of the Bregava River, not far from the famous Inat-ćuprija, it got its name from its proximity to the bridge.

Built in the early 18th century, the mosque is a waqf of Hadži Alija, originally from Stolac, who lived in Cairo at the time of construction. According to historical sources, he was a wealthy man and military commander, and he died before the completion of his endowment around 1734, when he was also buried in Egypt.

Ćuprijska Mosque is not only a religious building, but also an important part of the urban and cultural development of Stolac. Around it grew Hadži-Alina mahala, which still bears witness today to the rich Ottoman past of this Herzegovinian town.
