Description

Trg Slobode is the largest square in Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the historic center of Tuzla. It is a central place for socializing, cultural events and meetings. It brings together symbols of different historical periods: the Čaršija Mosque and fountain from the Ottoman era, the reconstructed Barok Building from the Austro-Hungarian period, and sculptural references to the Bosnian Middle Ages.

The Barok Building, demolished in 1983 due to ground subsidence, was rebuilt 25 years later in its original form, with the inscription Salines, Soli and Tuzla on the facade — three names for salt in different languages and eras. The fountain in the center of the square is decorated with stećak ornaments, and nearby there is a sculptural stećak and marble plaques with epitaphs from medieval tombstone inscriptions. An archaeological site with valuable remains was also discovered on the square. The square is open 24 hours a day and admission is free.

The square as a book of history

Trg Slobode is not just large — it is unique because it preserves visible traces of every period of Tuzla's history in one place. The Čaršija Mosque and Ottoman fountain on one side, the neo-Baroque facade of the Barok Building on the other, and between them a fountain decorated with stećak ornaments and marble plaques with epitaphs of Bosnian feudal nobles.

Such a layering of history within a single city square is rare even in much larger cities. The inscription on the Barok facade — Salines, Soli, Tuzla — sums up centuries in one sentence: it was all just salt, and everything came from it.

The square today

Trg Slobode is alive with activity. The fountain in the center, benches and green areas beside the sculptural stećak installation make it an ideal place for a walk and a rest at any time of day. The square is the starting point for exploring the old part of Tuzla — streets branch off from it toward Čaršija, the Panonska Lakes (0.5 km) and other city attractions.

In summer and during holidays, the square becomes the epicenter of music festivals, fairs and open-air exhibitions, and in the everyday life of Tuzla residents it plays a role that few public spaces can claim — a beating heart.
