Humac Museum
Description
The Museum in Humac, located within the Franciscan Monastery of St. Anthony of Padua just 2 km southwest of Ljubuški, is the oldest museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina — founded in 1884 thanks to the vision and dedication of Friar Anđel Nuić. Through three collections — prehistoric, ancient and medieval — the museum takes visitors on a journey through nearly 16,000 years of human presence in this area, from the Paleolithic to the Ottoman era.
The highlight of the collection is the famous Humačka Tablet from the 12th century, the oldest preserved written monument in the Croatian language, written in a mixture of Glagolitic and Bosnian Cyrillic, which for centuries was built into the monastery facade. Alongside the lapidarium with Roman tombstones and finds from the nearby Roman camp at Gračine, the museum also features a rich cultural and historical collection that bears witness to the continuity of the Franciscan mission of preserving the heritage of this region. A visit to the museum is the perfect complement to a tour of the Kravica and Koćuša waterfalls — in one day, you can combine the nature and culture of Ljubuški.
