Goršić polje Necropolis
Description
The necropolis in Goršić polje, located about 30 kilometers from Goražde, is one of the most monumental and significant monuments of medieval Bosnia and Herzegovina. The colossal importance of this site is best shown by the fact that in 2016 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognizing this impressive group of 325 stećci as a treasure of global importance.
Surrounded by untouched natural beauty, the stećci have defied time for centuries beneath a blanket of thick moss, while the cleaned ones reveal the masterful skill of ancient stonecutters through symbols of lilies, deer, crescents, and stars. Among the silent stone sleepers stands out one example with an epitaph, sending a message from the distant past and making the blend of history and nature almost mystical. Goršić polje is not just an archaeological site, but a cultural phenomenon whose peace and dignity attract visitors of all generations, offering them the chance to feel the true spirit of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s history in the palm of their hand.
