Old wooden mosque
Description
The Old Wooden Mosque in Bužim is located at the foot of Bužim Fortress and is one of the most valuable examples of traditional wooden architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although the exact date of its construction is unknown, it is believed to date from before the 19th century, while records confirm its restoration in the mid-1800s.
Throughout history, this mosque played an important role in the social and religious life of the area, for a long time serving as the central gathering place for the people of the Bužim district. Its courtyard was the site of important events, and according to tradition, it gathered a large number of believers from the surrounding villages.
Its special value lies in its unique architecture - it was built almost entirely of wood, without the use of metal, which makes it a rare example of traditional construction. It is considered one of the largest wooden mosques in the region, with a spacious interior, wooden pillars, and a distinctive structure that reflects the skill of the craftsmen of the time.
It gained its present appearance after restoration at the beginning of the 21st century, and today it is a protected national monument and an unmissable cultural and historical attraction of Bužim. In its courtyard there is also a group of hajji stones, which bear witness to the old custom of seeing off pilgrims on the Hajj and further enrich its authenticity.
