Source of the Tihaljina River

8.4 km to city center

Description

Below the monumental reddish cliffs of Peć Mlini, known as Cvitanjske stine, lies one of the most spectacular springs in Herzegovina. The Tihaljina River does not emerge quietly here; it bursts forcefully from the dark depths of a cave at the foot of a 150-meter-high rock massif, immediately creating a series of rapids and small waterfalls at its birth. The crystal-clear, blue-green water stands in perfect contrast to the rough, warm tones of the limestone, while the dense surrounding vegetation provides natural freshness even in the middle of the harshest Herzegovinian droughts. This spring is not only a hydrological phenomenon, but a place of incredible energy and peace, where the power of nature can be felt in every drop of water that emerges from the earth's depths.

The river that changes faces

Few geographical phenomena in Bosnia and Herzegovina are as poetic as this river. It starts in Posušje, sinks underground, emerges, sinks again and reappears, and each time it appears it carries a new name: Culuša, Ričina, Brina, Suvaja, Vrljika, Matica, Tihaljina, Mlade, Trebižat. In local speech, the whole course is simply called Rika. It remains the same itself — clear, fast, cold — only the people living along it give it a new name, as if each place on its banks wants to claim it as its own. In Peć Mlini, where it bursts from the rock below Drinovačko brdo, the river bears the name Tihaljina.

The spring as an oasis

Writer Hamza Humo described this area in a way that made readers want to see it for themselves. Anyone who comes to the source of the Tihaljina River understands what he was writing about — beneath high cliffs, in a freshness that comes as a surprise in the middle of scorching Herzegovina, water bubbles out of the rock in the quiet hamlet of Peć Mlini. The surroundings are fully landscaped, and the old mills by the spring bear witness that people used this place long before it became a tourist destination.

Adrenaline by the spring

Peć Mlini is not just a contemplative place to watch the spring — it is also an adventure park with one of the longest ziplines in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Set up from Petnjik Hill, the zipline offers a unique view of the Tihaljina canyon and valley. For those seeking bigger challenges, there is also the Željezni put via ferrata on Cvitanjske stijene, rated extremely demanding, as well as two climbing areas in the park. Just a hundred meters away, the entrance also leads to Ravlića Cave — one of the most archaeologically significant caves in the region.
