Description

The source of the Bastašica River is located just five kilometers from Drvar, in the village of Bastaši, and is one of the most beautiful natural sites in this area. The Bastašica River has a short course, about one kilometer long, but despite that it is full of exceptional natural beauty.

The spring itself forms a deep natural hollow surrounded by high, steep rocks, and the water is exceptionally clear, clean, and greenish in color. Right from the beginning of its course, the river creates small cascades and waterfalls, especially after heavy rainfall, giving this place a special visual appeal.

The area around the spring has been arranged as a small eco-zone, with marked trails, benches, and a wooden footbridge that allows easy access and enjoyment of nature. The surroundings are part of forests of high protective value, which play an important role in preserving watercourses and preventing erosion.

Although the river is rich in brown trout, fishing is prohibited at this site in order to preserve its natural balance. Today, the source of the Bastašica is an ideal place for walking, resting, and enjoying untouched nature.

Deep karst depression with vertical cliffs

A breathtaking spring

Bastašica is a river that almost has no course — and yet it shows everything a river can be. From a deep karst depression surrounded by vertical cliffs, water so clear that it can be drunk directly from the streambed springs forth.

Already in the first few meters it forms waterfalls, and the emerald-green hue that dominates the entire kilometer-long course toward Unac comes from the combination of exceptional clarity and the karst riverbed. That shortness and density of beauty in such a small area make Bastašica one of those places that does not require an hour’s walk to justify a visit — everything is right there before you.

Titova pećina and history

The source of Bastašica carries not only natural but also historical significance. Above the spring itself is a cave where Josip Broz Tito stayed on the eve of the Airborne Assault on Drvar on May 25, 1944 — one of the largest airborne operations by German forces in the Second World War in the Balkans.

That combination of wild nature and historical layers makes Bastašica a place that can satisfy both nature lovers and those following the trail of wartime history. Titova pećina in Drvar is a separate entity on the portal that covers that historical context in detail.
