Blidinje Lake
Description
Blidinje Lake is the largest mountain lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a protected geomorphological natural monument that gave Blidinje Nature Park its name. It lies on Dugo Polje at around 1,183 metres above sea level, between the mighty mountains of Čvrsnica and Vran. Its surface varies from 2.5 to 6 km², while its greatest depth rarely exceeds a few metres – and thanks to that the water warms quickly in summer and is good for swimming.
As it has no permanent surface streams, the lake changes its appearance from season to season: in spring, after the snow melts, it is at its largest, while in summer the level drops considerably. In winter the surface usually freezes and the whole area takes on an unreal white look. The lake can be reached by car almost to the shore, and around it are meadows, mountain houses and restaurants – ideal for a picnic and an escape from the summer heat.
Activities & Amenities on the lake
Blidinje Lake has something to offer in every season — in summer, the shallow water warms up and invites swimmers, while the grassy meadows along the shore become the perfect spot for picnics and barbecues in the mountain air. A walk around the lake rewards visitors with breathtaking views in every direction.
In winter, the lake transforms — snow and the nearby Risovac ski resort make it a favourite winter getaway. A gentle grassy shoreline, car access almost to the water's edge, and mountain lodges and restaurants by the lake make Blidinje an accessible and comfortable destination for all generations.
Lake Facts
Blidinje Lake is not just the most beautiful — it is also the largest mountain lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina and a protected geomorphological natural monument. The entire Nature Park Blidinje takes its name from this lake, which speaks to its central importance to the whole area.
A special treasure is the endemic fish oštrulja, a species that lives exclusively in these waters and nowhere else on the planet. And every visit is different — the lake changes its appearance from season to season, always offering a new view to those who return.
