Old Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Description
The parish church in Posušje is a true symbol of spiritual endurance and the turbulent history of this region, from its beginnings in 1872 when construction was interrupted by the Herzegovinian Uprising, all the way to today's monumental new church. Its path has been marked by suffering and restoration, from the tragic lightning strike that brought down the first bell tower in 1905 to the construction of the new Gothic one in 1912, whose stone blocks became the most recognizable ornament of the Posušje area.
Alongside the restoration of the old church, whose original stone beauty is being brought back, a new, impressive building has been rising since 1996 according to the design of architect Marijan Hržić; with a vast crypt area of 530 m2 and a church of 948 m2, two bell towers nearly 50 meters high, and six new bells, this building, with its modern momentum and stained glass, meets the needs of a community of almost 10,000 believers, creating an inseparable bond between the past and the future of Posušje.
