Valley of Heroes Tjentište
Description
The Valley of Heroes, a memorial complex at Tjentište in the heart of Sutjeska National Park, is one of the most significant memorial sites in BiH. It honours the Battle of the Sutjeska, one of the hardest and most decisive battles of WWII, fought in the spring of 1943. The complex opened in 1974 and was largely built by volunteer youth brigades from across the former Yugoslavia.
At its centre stands a monumental sculpture by the artist Miodrag Živković – two stylised stone forms symbolising the breakthrough through the Sutjeska canyon. The monument is still regarded as a masterpiece of European architecture. At its foot lies an ossuary, while the nearby Memorial House by Ranko Radović holds the Battle of the Sutjeska Museum and thirteen frescoes by Krsto Hegedušić. Set amid the park's nature, the complex unites history, art and mountain calm.
