Sutjeska National Park
Description
Sutjeska National Park is the oldest and most valuable national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, declared in 1962, located on the main road between Foča, Trebinje, and Dubrovnik. Spanning more than 17,000 hectares, it conceals a true treasure of European nature — the Perućica Primeval Forest, one of the last and largest primeval forests in Europe with trees reaching up to 65 meters in height and up to 300 years in age, and Maglić, the highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina at 2,386 meters.
The park protects 17 crystal clear rivers and streams, eight glacial lakes on Mount Zelengora known as the "mountain eyes," the Skakavac Waterfall reaching up to 80 meters in height, and the breathtaking canyon of the Sutjeska River. In the dense forests live the brown bear, lynx, wolf, chamois, wildcat, and golden eagle, while the rivers are rich in trout and grayling. Alongside its natural rarities, the park also preserves the Memorial Complex at Tjentište — a testament to the famous Battle of the Sutjeska in 1943. Sutjeska is not just a national park — it is a living encyclopedia of European nature.
