Description

The stone guardian of time above the Neretva

The clock tower in Počitelj is one of the most striking buildings in this museum town. Built around 1664, it was not only a timekeeper but also a strategically important structure that dominates the entire setting because of its height and hilltop position. It was built by the well-known Počitelj benefactor Ibrahim Pasha, the deputy of Grand Vizier Ćuprilić, as part of his major endowment that also included a madrasa, inn and hammam. With its distinctive windows on all four sides and slender silhouette, this tower remains one of the most beautiful symbols of Herzegovinian architecture and has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

For centuries, the clock tower dictated the rhythm of life in Počitelj, but it also served as a lookout point. The clock on the tower ran continuously until 1917. Its proper operation was maintained by masters from Mostar, such as the famous clockmaker Avdaga Bjelevac, as well as the imams of the nearby mosque.

Because of the clear view over the Neretva Valley, guards often stayed in the tower to monitor movement and warn of possible danger. Behind the massive wooden doors are steep, old stone stairs that lead through several levels all the way to the clock mechanism, bearing witness to the skill of the builders of that time.
