Description

In the very heart of untouched nature, where the Spreča stream murmurs through the monastery grounds of the Annunciation Monastery, lies Papraća — the most monumental Orthodox shrine in Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to local tradition, it is linked to the Nemanjić dynasty and župan Vukan, while its architecture proudly bears the mark of the famous Morava School. With its tall drum and dome dominating the landscape, this church stands as a witness to centuries of faith and survival.

It was named after the lush fern that adorns the surroundings, but this area hides much deeper layers of history. From Roman coins found in the soil to necropolises of stećci standing guard nearby, Papraća is a place where the past can be felt. Fragments of 16th-century frescoes and the peace brought by the nearby mountain river make it an essential stop for every traveler in search of spirituality and historical treasures.
