Vodopad Žukovica
Description
Vodopad Žukovica is a hidden waterfall in western Herzegovina, located in the village of Zagorje not far from Posušje. It is reached from Posušje toward the settlement of Vir, through the village of Zagorje, and then by gravel road all the way to the waterfall itself. The Žukovica stream cascades over a vertical rock face in dense forest, creating a scene that is almost untouched by mass tourism — there are hardly any signs of visitors around the waterfall.
Nearby is Žukovička Cave, explored by renowned speleologists and archaeologists, and during dry periods, when the waterfall dries up, it is possible to look into its depths. The waterfall is included in the L401 Posušje–Žukovica cycling route (63 km) organized by HerzegovinaBike, which passes through the villages of Vir and Zavelim and continues toward Tribistovo Lake. An ideal destination for lovers of untouched nature, photography, and escaping the crowds.
No litter — no crowds
There is one incredible sign of just how unknown Vodopad Žukovica is: there is no litter around it. Not a single piece. In Bosnia and Herzegovina — a country that has far too many illegal dumps near attractive sites — that can only mean one thing: almost nobody comes here.
And anyone who comes is left breathless. The Žukovica stream plunges vertically down the rock face surrounded by dense forest, and the only sounds you hear are the water and the birds. It is not hard to understand why a place like this should remain exactly as it is.
