Vranica Mountain

Description

Mount Vranica, located in the very geographical heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is not only the country's most famous mining mountain but also a fascinating natural system that connects a dramatic volcanic past with gentle mountain pastures. Unlike the limestone massifs of Herzegovina, Vranica is composed of impermeable Paleozoic shales and igneous rocks, making it incredibly rich in surface water. From its peaks, such as the highest Nadkrstaca (2,112 m), numerous streams and rivers flow, creating spectacular waterfalls like Kozički and Ždrimački, while in its depths lies a glacial gem – Prokoško Lake.

As the center of the Central Bosnian Ore Mountains, Vranica has been the driving force of this region's development for centuries. Its igneous rocks conceal rich deposits of iron, copper, mercury, baryte, and even precious metals like gold and silver in the vicinity of Bakovići. Although it is traffic-isolated today, in the past key caravan routes passed over its mountain passes, such as the Sarajevo and Travnik Gates, connecting the mining settlements with the rest of the world. This mining tradition is directly linked to the development of Fojnica and its famous thermal springs.

Vranica is home to rare and endemic species that you won't find anywhere else in the world. Among the rocks, the Vranica bellflower, Bosnian bellflower, and Vranica gentian bloom, while the waters of Prokoško Lake are home to an endemic salamander. Besides its natural beauty, the mountain also holds deep spiritual significance. At the Vrankamen site, Franciscan friars from Fojnica have, since ancient times, held the traditional "shepherd's mass," continuing a centuries-old tradition of pilgrimage and the human connection with this mountain massif.
