Description

The Duvno Basilica of St. Cyril and Methodius bears witness to the centuries-long devotion of the Duvno region to its faith and the Catholic Church. Its construction began a hundred years ago, inspired by fra Mijo Čuić, a Franciscan friar and visionary, who conceived this memorial church as a reminder of the thousandth anniversary of the coronation of the first Croatian king, Tomislav, on Duvno Field in 925. In search of support and funds for construction, fra Mijo also traveled to America, showing his enthusiasm and devotion to his people and faith.

The foundations of the basilica were laid in 1916 by Zagreb architect Stjepan Podhorsky, and the event was recorded by contemporary writers and church dignitaries. The connection between the Duvno region and Zagreb has remained steadfast over the century, confirmed by the support of church authorities and benefactors, among whom the "Braća hrvatskog Zmaja" are especially significant.

Through its centuries-long existence, the basilica has survived wartime destruction, hardship, and adversity, yet it has always remained the spiritual and cultural heart of the Duvno region. Generations of the people of Duvno have grown up around it, enriching themselves through faith, education, and community. Today, the Duvno Basilica is not only a religious building, but a symbol of tradition, culture, and togetherness, a place where centuries-old faith and human devotion resonate through the generations.
