Franciscan Monastery Tolisa
Description
In the plains of Bosanska Posavina, in Tolisa near Orašje, rises one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers of this region — the Monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This impressive complex, declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina because of its value, is a symbol of endurance and enlightenment. Its monumental church, with two 56-meter bell towers, was built on the model of the Jesuit church in Osijek and dominates the Posavina landscape as a true “beacon” of faith and culture.
The monastery in Tolisa is not only a place of prayer, but also home to an incredible movable heritage that bears witness to millennia of life in this region.
They preserve objects from the Neolithic, antiquity, and the Middle Ages, including nearly a thousand coins from various rulers — from Roman and Byzantine to Bosnian and Ottoman.
It houses more than 11,000 books, and among the most valuable exhibits is the original firman of Sultan Abdul Aziz from 1863, which authorized the construction of the church.
