Description

Just a half-hour walk from Zagrađe takes you to Kacalj, also known as the most beautiful viewpoint above Kakanj. Located atop Gradina, this “natural balcony” offers spectacular panoramic views of the valley, surrounding villages, and mountain ranges, leaving visitors breathless with its vastness.

In addition to its natural beauty, Kacalj also carries a deep historical legacy. It is believed that in the Middle Ages it served as an important outpost of royal Bobovac, as evidenced by nearby stećak necropolises and the remains of an ancient church. It is ideal for recreation seekers looking for a blend of an easy walk and a touch of Bosnian history.

Roof of Kakanj

Kacalj is not a demanding climb, but the reward is disproportionately great. A half-hour walk along a well-trodden trail from Zagrađe brings visitors to the top of Gradina, where one of the most beautiful views of Kakanj unfolds — villages, valleys, and mountains in a panoramic frame that takes your breath away. For those seeking a greater challenge, there are also harder routes via Ivnica and Skenderovići, or a longer trail from Planinarskog doma Bočica, which offers an extra dose of nature along the way.

Outpost of Bobovac

According to local legend, Kacalj served in the Middle Ages as an outpost of the royal town of Bobovac — a strategic point that monitored the approaches to the fortress. This assumption is supported by the nearby remains of the Ivničko-zagradska necropolis of stećci and traces of an old church in Skenderovići, whose stone remains can still be seen today. This historical layer, together with the natural beauty and rich flora and fauna, makes Kacalj a place that combines hiking with discovering medieval Bosnia.
