Lukina cave
Description
Lukina Cave is located at the foot of the vertical cliffs of the Middle Rock, at an altitude of 930 meters above sea level, and the very sight of the rock rising above the cave entrance, covered in 30-centimeter ivy, tells you that you are entering somewhere special. It is reached via a well-maintained hiking trail from Lake Mašica, an easy 40-minute walk, and at the entrance you are greeted by locked doors—because Lukina Cave is not open to unsupervised visitors.
Spanning 200 meters in length and decorated throughout with stalactites and cave formations in colors ranging from pure white to dark red, this cave holds stories that reach deep into the past. Here, the remains of a 15,000-year-old cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), fossilized bones of red deer and cave hyenas have been found, as well as traces of human presence several centuries old—all in one place, like a compressed encyclopedia of the life that once flourished here.
The ceilings are low in some sections and require crawling, so caving equipment is mandatory—and at Tajana you can rent it with the guidance of experienced speleologists. The Cave in the Middle Rock, just a 15-minute walk away at 970 meters, offers a continuation of the experience—with metal bridges through its interior and a stalagmite resembling a mother with her child—and is considered one of the most beautiful caves in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
