Mount Ozren
Description
Ozren Mountain is not a mountain for records — it is a mountain for the soul. Located in the northern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, between the Bosnia and Spreča rivers, Ozren is a place where wide clearings and lush pastures alternate with pine and oak forests through which clear mountain streams and thermal mineral springs wind their way. What makes Ozren truly special is not its height or dramatic relief — but its living cultural heritage, which UNESCO has recognized and inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Every year, on September 11, the people of Ozren gather the herb iva in an old ritual that dates back to antiquity — a plant that, according to local belief, cures almost everything, cleanses the blood and relieves stress. You don’t come to Ozren just to hike — you come to feel what it means to live more slowly, more deeply and closer to nature.
Ozren is a natural playground for mountain bikers — a network of gravel and forest roads offers routes for all levels, from relaxed rides through the woods to demanding marathon stages. The two most popular routes, about 33 km long, follow the Barice – Čavljak – Skakavac and Borije – Crepoljsko – Skakavac directions, with a reward at the end in the form of one of the most beautiful waterfalls in BiH. For those looking for a real challenge, the Sarajevo – Vučija luka – Čevljanovići – Bijambare route stretches for 94 km and passes through the outer slopes of Sarajevo, the Ozren plateau and untouched forest all the way to Bijambare. The descent toward Skakavac waterfall is a special recommendation — a section that takes cyclists’ breath away, literally and figuratively.
A mountain for everyone
Ozren is a mountain that does not intimidate with its height, but wins you over with its diversity. Its terrain – a combination of forest trails, gravel roads, streams, and open peaks – is ideal for anyone who wants nature without extreme demands. Two hiking associations on the mountain guide visitors along marked routes and organize tours of local sights with licensed guides, while those who prefer independent exploration can use tested routes with detailed instructions. Adventurers looking for an adrenaline rush will find it at the top of Gostilja – one of the few paragliding launch sites in northern Bosnia, where thermal currents in spring and summer reach heights of 2,500 meters.
Lakes, springs and UNESCO heritage
Ozren hides several special treasures. On the mountain there are two artificial lakes – Goransko and Orlovo – which are favorite swimming spots for residents of nearby towns. Thermal mineral springs on the mountain attract lovers of natural healing, and the clean mountain streams and brooks offer shade and silence even on the hottest summer days. One unique cultural element of the mountain is especially worth highlighting: the harvesting of the ive herb – the mountain plant Teucrium montanum – on Ozren was added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018, making Ozren one of the few Bosnian mountains with a UNESCO-recognized tradition.
