Description

Right on the doorstep of Živinice, in the suburban settlement of Bašigovci, natural beauty and a distant past meet, creating a unique cultural and tourist site. Rajsko jezero, as a modern oasis for recreation, has gained unusual and precious guardians – a necropolis of stećci that bears witness to the life and customs of the medieval Bosnian state.

These monumental stone monuments, which date roughly from the 12th to the 16th century, were not always in this location. In an effort to protect them from neglect and decay, and to make them more accessible to the public, historians, and archaeologists, the stećci were carefully moved to the immediate vicinity of the lake. In this way, the area, originally conceived as a sports and recreation complex, gained a deeper historical dimension.

Today, while visitors enjoy the clear water of Rajsko jezero or stroll along the landscaped paths, they have the chance to touch history that is several hundred years old. The combination of turquoise water and ancient carved stone makes Bašigovci a must-see stop for anyone who wants to explore the cultural treasures of the Tuzla region in a very different and more accessible way.
