Orlovačko Lake
Description
Orlovačko Lake is the most popular and most visited of the nine glacial lakes on Zelengora, located at 1,438 meters above sea level at the foot of Bregoč, the highest peak of Zelengora. Surrounded by grassy rises and meadows, with the peaks of Orlovac, Orlovača, Stog, and Ljeljen framing it, this glacial lake, 350 meters long and 100 meters wide, offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in Sutjeska National Park.
It is fed by a spring nearby, and its water is exceptionally clear. In summer it warms up enough for swimming, making it a real refreshment for hikers arriving after hours on the trails. Orlovačko Lake is also the center of Zelengora’s hiking and cycling routes and the starting point for day trips to the other lakes and peaks. It is home to brown trout, lake trout, and rainbow trout.
The center of Zelengora trails
Orlovačko Lake is not only one of the most beautiful lakes on Zelengora, but also its natural center — the starting point from which all the other Zelengora lakes and peaks can be explored. To the west, the trail leads to Štirinsko Lake and Kotlaničko Lake, and to the south it climbs to Bregoč, the highest peak of the mountain. The tour from Orlovačko to Štirinsko Lake, about ten kilometers long, passes through gentle plateaus, grassy valleys, and the edge of the forest — ideal for hikers of all ages. Zelengora is also part of Via Dinarica, one of the best hiking routes in Europe, placing Orlovačko Lake on the map for walking travelers from all over the world.
