Vrelo Bosne

Source of the Bosna River

12.1 km to the city center

Description

Vrelo Bosne is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the vicinity of Sarajevo, located at the foot of Igman Mountain in Ilidža, just 12 kilometers from the city center. This morphological, hydrological, and botanical-horticultural gem spans 603 hectares and is home to at least 26 plant communities and 20 animal species, some of which are endemic.

Islands covered in lush greenery, lakes with swans and fish, and the source of the Bosna River create a sight that captivates every visitor. Leading to the source is the famous Great Alley with 726 plane and horse chestnut trees, planted up to 1894 — ideal for walking, jogging, and cycling. The recognizable symbol is the horse-drawn carriages that have been transporting guests along the alley from Ilidža to the source for over 100 years. In summer the temperature is several degrees lower than in the city — a true paradise for escaping the heat.
