Mount Bjelašnica

21.1 km to the city center

Description

Bjelašnica is one of the most popular mountains in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the largest ski resort near Sarajevo, just twenty kilometres away. Its highest peak, also known as Opservatorij, rises to 2,067 metres, the highest permanently inhabited point in the country, with a weather station over a century old. It takes its name from the snow that whitens it from November to May, and often in midsummer too.

This karst mountain is surrounded by Igman, Treskavica and Visočica and the famous Rakitnica canyon. Bjelašnica is a mountain of contrasts: rustic stone villages with shepherds and home cooks meet modern hotels, pools and wellness centres. Host of the 1984 Winter Olympics, today it offers something for everyone – from skiing, hiking and cycling to a cable car and family picnic spots. In summer or winter, Bjelašnica blends adventure, nature and rest close to the city.
