Skakavac Waterfall

Waterfall

10.7 km to the city center

Description

Skakavac Waterfall lies about 12 km north of the centre of Sarajevo, above the village of Nahorevo on the slopes of Sarajevo's Ozren. At 98 metres it is one of the tallest and most beautiful waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the fifth highest in the Balkans. Although the flow of water is not large, from this height it scatters into countless small cascades and droplets that create a characteristic water mist.

The waterfall is protected as a geomorphological natural monument, and the protected area of more than 1,400 hectares is home to over 1,500 plant species – many of them endemic and relict – as well as the rich wildlife of its spruce, fir and beech forests. Skakavac is a favourite destination for walkers, hikers, cyclists and photographers seeking a peaceful day in unspoilt nature close to the city.
