Description

More than six and a half thousand years before the Bosnian kings would be crowned in nearby Mile, one of the most organized prehistoric communities in all of Europe lived on this very stretch of land by the Bosna River. The prehistoric settlement of Okolište, located just a few kilometers from the center of Visoko, is the largest Neolithic site of the Butmir culture in the Visoko basin — a complex of more than 7 hectares with remains of over 50 houses with rectangular foundations, five defensive ditches, ovens, hearths, and workshops for making stone tools.

Systematic research by the Sarajevo National Museum and the German Archaeological Institute from 2002 to 2008 uncovered a community that grew wheat and barley, raised livestock, and hunted — and was already living in an organized and purposeful way between 4700 and 4500 BC. Declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006, the Okolište site is today one of the most important Neolithic sites in Europe — a quiet witness that the Visoko Valley has always been a special place.

Late Neolithic and early Eneolithic; founded around 5,200 BC

Area: ~7 hectares; at least 9 stratigraphic development phases

Research and methods

What makes Okolište scientifically exceptional is not only its age — but the precision with which it has been studied. A German-Bosnian team carried out campaigns between 2002 and 2008 that combined classic excavation with geomagnetic surveying. This method, which reveals underground structures without digging, showed a dense network of houses, ditches, and fences arranged within a seven-hectare settlement.

Analysis of the stratigraphy identified at least nine development phases — meaning the settlement evolved continuously over the centuries and did not appear all at once. Each phase bears traces of rebuilding, construction, and the everyday life of a community that lived there almost without interruption.

Protection and significance

The Commission to Preserve National Monuments of BiH declared Okolište a national monument in 2006, based on the site’s exceptional scientific and cultural significance. This is formal confirmation of what archaeologists already know: Okolište is not just one of the ancient settlements — it is key to understanding what late Neolithic life in central Bosnia looked like seven thousand years ago.

Finds from Okolište help reconstruct the chronology of the Butmir culture and settlement patterns across the entire Visoko basin, and the international research attention it has attracted speaks to the global significance of this site.
