Šerefudin's White Mosque
Description
Šerefudin's White Mosque is one of those places that surprises you at first glance because it looks unlike anything you have seen before. Located in the heart of Visoko, this mosque, whose history dates back to 1477 and perhaps even earlier, today bears the signature of one of the greatest Bosnian architects of the 20th century — Zlatko Ugljen.
Its complete reconstruction in 1980 was not just a renovation of a building; it was a bold architectural statement — a blend of Islamic tradition and modern postmodernism that won the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1983, one of the most respected architectural honours in the world.
As if that were not enough, in 2007 the Hungarian Society of Architects ranked the White Mosque among the three best-designed sacred spaces in all of Europe. In a city proud of its pyramids and royal history, Šerefudin's Mosque quietly but proudly reminds visitors that Visoko holds another world record — this time in architecture.
