Description

Vučja planina is a true paradise for lovers of untouched nature and one of the most beautiful destinations for excursion and hunting tourism in central Bosnia. This vast mountain plateau, whose highest peak reaches 1,378 meters above sea level, captivates with fresh air and a peace that is rarely found.

Increasingly popular among hikers, the mountain offers refuge in a mountain lodge in the village of Bijelo Bučje, reached by a road from the direction of Teslić via Blatnica. Whether you are an avid hunter or simply want to escape the noise of the city, Vučja planina is a place you will surely return to after your first visit.

A plateau between the sky and the forest

Vučja planina is not a mountain with one clear peak — it is a plateau. A vast grassy plateau at an altitude of over 1,300 meters stretches in all directions, and from it branch deep canyons of numerous streams and small rivers overgrown with dense forest, giving the mountain its special character. The plateau is also home to many springs of clean mountain water, some of which form small waterfalls in places. It is also a historically pastoral area — shepherds and herders used to bring livestock here in summer, and that tradition, though reduced, continues to this day.

Ovnovijada — fights that have been held since 1977

Vučja planina has its own traditional event, a unique cultural occasion in this part of Bosnia. Ovnovijada has been held on the mountain plateau since 1977, every year at the end of August or the beginning of September, and attracts up to 10,000 visitors. Ram fights, competitions in old disciplines such as tug-of-war, grass mowing, and long jump, as well as exhibitions of local dairy products, make it an event that draws people from across the region.

Meokrnje and the Watershed

From Vučja planina toward the southwest stretches a ridge to Meokrnje (1,425 m), which many consider a separate mountain, but which is actually the highest peak of this entire mountain area. Meokrnje is home to one of the rare geographical points in Bosnia where the watersheds of as many as four river systems separate within a small area: the Bosna, Bila, Ugar, and Ilomska to the south, and the Vrbanja to the northwest. Locals call this place Prelivode.

Access and Warning

The mountain lodge in the village of Bijelo Bučje, on the northern slopes of Vučja planina, can be reached from Teslić via Blatnica. The lodge has 16 beds, drinking water, electricity, and a kitchen, and is managed by PD Adrenalin from Teslić. Since 2017, the 110 km multi-purpose recreational trail Trapisti–Bijelo Bučje, marked according to international standards, has also run across the mountain.

MINES: part of the plateau along the entity border is mined — movement is only allowed with local accompaniment and along marked paths.
