Zvornik Fortress
Description
Above Zvornik rises the magnificent fortress of Đurđev grad, one of the most valuable medieval complexes in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This unique stronghold, divided into Upper, Middle, and Lower Town, has been declared a national monument and is a true open-air history book. It is believed that its foundations were laid at the turn of the 13th to the 14th century, while it bears its present name after Despot Đurađ Branković, who captured it in the 15th century.
Over the centuries it was shaped by different empires; the Turks expanded it, and the Austro-Hungarians added to it, leaving behind a testimony to turbulent times. Today, this complex is a favorite destination for visitors, who can reach the top via a gentle 1,700-meter walking trail from the city center or by asphalt road. The reward for the climb is unforgettable - from the landscaped viewpoints there is a magnificent view of the panorama of Zvornik, the emerald Zvornik Lake, and the winding course of the Drina River, which leaves no one indifferent.
