Necropolis of Stećci in Ričina
Description
The archaeological site of stećci along the Ričina stream in Čitluk has officially been declared a national monument. This prestigious title confirms what the local community has always known – that the Herzegovinian karst holds a treasure of priceless value.
The necropolis at Ričina, although it contains only six stećci, fascinates with its monumentality. These "stone sleepers" are among the largest ever found in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Located right on the bank of the stream, these noble mausoleums are not just grave markers; they are testimony to a powerful medieval community whose nobles chose this gentle landscape for their eternal resting places.
This site is only one part of the broader picture that experts call the "Posušje culture." The continuity of life in this area fascinates archaeologists.
The declaration as a national monument did not happen by chance. It is the result of the dedicated work of the Municipality of Posušje, which in the past two years launched key projects for the conservation, restoration, and protection of the built heritage in Ričina. The unanimous initiative of the Municipal Council addressed to state institutions has been recognized as an example of how local government cares for its heritage.
