Japodski Islands
Description
The Japodian Islands represent a true "rest for the soul" and one of the most beautiful hidden corners of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located on five river islands of the magical Una River near Bihać. This perfect blend of unspoiled nature and cultural heritage offers a unique experience of "ćejf" — from waking up in fairytale treehouses to the sound of the river, to enjoying authentic homemade dishes, all the way to an open-air cinema under a clear sky. Named after the ancient Illyrian tribe of the Japodes, these islands combine a mystical past and an adrenaline-filled present, offering peaceful serenity in countless shades of green or the exciting adventure of rafting at Štrbački Buk. Situated between two national parks — Una and Plitvice — the Japodian Islands are a modern oasis where the wild beauty of the river and hospitality create the perfect escape from everyday life.
Five River Islands on the Una
The Japodian Islands consist of five river islets connected by wooden bridges, located in the settlement of Račić near Bihać. Surrounded by the emerald Una River and lush green nature, the islands offer sights rarely seen — calm water, wooden footbridges, and an untouched oasis that takes the breath away of every visitor.
Unique Accommodation by the River
The Japodian Islands offer accommodation unlike anything else in the region — a transparent dome for stargazing to the sound of the Una, a fairytale treehouse, and glamping bungalows directly on the riverbank. Each option provides an intimate atmosphere and a wake-up in nature that turns a holiday into an unforgettable experience.
Rafting and Adventure on the Una
The Una River offers one of the most beautiful rafting adventures in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Crystal clear emerald water, exciting rapids, and the unspoiled nature of the National Park make every run a special experience. The most popular is the National Park Route — the royal stage of the Una through the most beautiful sections of the river, accessible to all ages with licensed skippers and full equipment.
Gastronomy and Films Under the Stars
After the adventure on the water, the Japodian Islands also offer special evening experiences — film screenings under the stars to the sound of the Una River and a traditional restaurant with homemade Bosnian specialties. Fresh air, stars overhead, and the taste of homemade cuisine round off a perfect day at one of the most original destinations in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
